John and his wife Marlena have lived in Sedgwick County for over 30 years and he is proud of his family’s Kansas roots which date back to the late 1800’s. He pursued a Bachelors degree at the University of Kansas where he studied Political Science and Public Administration.
John has been in the event planning, sales and marketing industry for over 30 years. In 2008 John was recognized by the Wichita Business Journal as one of Wichita’s 40 Under 40 Honoree’s for his work in the special events industry. John, Marlena and their daughter Melissa own a small business based in Wichita.
John has been involved in multiple local and national political campaigns including serving as 4th district Field Director for Senator Jerry Moran’s 2016 re-election campaign, Regional Director for Governor Rick Perry’s presidential campaign and canvasing in Iowa for the Romney/Ryan campaign. He has also been very involved in the local Republican Party; serving as a Precinct Committeeman, graduating from the inaugural Kansas Republican Men’s Leadership Series. John was an alternate delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention and a delegate in 2016. John has served on the City of Wichita’s District IV Advisory Board and the Wichita Crime Commission . In 2012 he was appointed by Governor Sam Brownback to serve as chairman of the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training and was reappointed again in 2016.
In September of 2014 John was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. He currently serves on the House Judiciary, Energy & Environment and Health & Human Services committees.
Members of Reliance Community Church, John and Marlena are also very active volunteers in the Wichita community and are passionate about their public service. They are proud supporters of Music Theatre of Wichita and Kansans for Life and both continue to volunteer their time for a number of local non-profit organizations. John has been involved in a number of charity events including the Cattleman’s Ball, Death by Chocolate at Exploration Place and the annual U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign.
